Rareware
I have created this section of Dhryland to be a repository for all those little
programs I've found over the years which are very rare and/or are no longer
being developed. Some of them don't even have their own homepage. One or two
come from non-English websites which are a pain to navigate. So, download them
from here.
If you found a program that you really like which is hard to locate on the Web, mail it to me and I'll include it here so nobody ever has to do the Google hunt for it again.

Ad-aware is a free multi spyware removal
utility that scans your memory, registry and hard drives for known spyware
and scumware components and lets you remove them safely. You can update
the definition file over the Internet. Regular use of this program should
be an essential part of your PC housekeeping tasks. |

A damn fine MP3 player and something
I used religiously (in favour of WinAMP) for months because of its built-in
crossfading ability. Eventually, WinAMP's plugins caught up (and MusePack
audio compression was developed - creating .MPC files which Apollo can't
play). Still, it's here for archival purposes. Nice, neat interface. |

Once upon a time, there used to be a
brilliant all-in-one firewall package called AtGuard. Norton bought the
rights to AtGuard and used its technology for NIS but they completely
ruined it in the process, jamming up the usability and turning it into
utter bloatware. This version (unsupported and orphaned), in my opinion,
is still the best firewall available for Win 95/98/98SE and ME. Not only
is it an interactive "learning" firewall, but it can selectively
block banner ads, disable Javascript, cookies etc. For its size, it's
awesome. I have to grudgingly admit that sissy's firewall GroanAlarm
also seems to be coming of age these days (the original versions sucked).
Plus the latter works with Win2K/XP. Hm. Still think this one is better. |

Pretty cool program for changing the
screen resolution and refresh rate. Very small. |

Here's a hidden gem. Stumbled across
this on a Japanese web site. I'm one of those people who have a million
and one icons on my desktop. But sometimes, when I switch resolution or
something else buggers up like the explorer shell taking a dump, the icons
all lose position. This program allows you to "snapshot" the
positions of all icons on your desktop for any particular resolution.
So when my icons all auto-arrange along the left side of the screen, I
run this program and they all move to their snapshotted areas. I can't
begin to describe what a wonderful feeling I had when I found this util.
So here it is, for all time. |
My Wishlist
Currently there's only one program that I've been trying to track down for ages.
It's called ELDOS CLOCK v3.14. I know Eldos has released "Pads". I
know there are other versions out there. But I want v3.14. It used to be everywhere,
then all of a sudden it disappeared off the Internet. Why do people do that?
Blow away a program simply because a newer and not necessarily better version
came out, I mean. I'm still trying to work out why people run Windows XP! Anyway,
if you have Eldos Pads v3.14 could you please email me the archive? I would
be most grateful. Dee aitch arr why at-symbol softhome dot net. Thanks.
